| A
hazardous chemical is a toxic gas, liquid or solid
that can poison people and the environment. A
chemical emergency occurs when a hazardous chemical
is released and the release has the potential
for harming people's health. Chemical releases
can be unintentional, as in the case of an industrial
accident, or deliberate, as in the case of a terrorist
attack. |

| You
may be exposed to a chemical in three ways: |
- Breathing
the chemical
-
Swallowing contaminated food, water, or medication
- Touching
the chemical, or coming into contact with
clothing or things that have touched the chemical.
-
Remember, you may be exposed to chemicals
even though you may not be able to see or
smell anything unusual.
