As I have mentioned before, hazards come in all sizes and strengths. Preparedness isn’t just for the catastrophic events we may encounter, but for the everyday incidents that the world unfolds before us. And even though we may never be fully prepared for what lies ahead, isn’t it better to do what we can in our own strength than to rely on someone else for our protection and needs?

Sometimes you just need information at your fingertips, and who has time to read a 600 page manual on how to prepare for emergencies; am I right?

The Kings County Preparedness Website has many links to resources you need - right at your fingertips. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, now is the time. September is National Preparedness Month, and my challenge to you this year is to create your own resource manual; something that suits your individual needs. That could be as simple as a one-page listing of the links you find that pertains to you, to a print out of all the pages you would like to keep in a file or binder for easy access. Let’s start with the basic overview of the website shall we?

  • Directory of Resources
    http://www.kingscountyoem.com/CountyKings/resources.htm

This link lists our website pages alphabetically by topic. Such topics include animals, children, disaster kits, disaster preparedness resources, emotions, farming, first aid, hazards resources, Lemoore Naval Air Station, Schools, and even your supply checklists.

  • Want to know what the weather forecast will be at a click of a button?
To the far left of the home page you will see a navigation bar. Second to the bottom is the “Weather” button. For the local weather forecast, just type in your zip code at the upper left corner in the small space provided and you will get the Forecast at a Glance for the new few days as well as a detailed 7-day Forecast

  Kings County Web Site:
www.kingscountyoem.com

Need to go directly to the Kings County Website? Again at the navigation bar to the far left, you will see the third button from the bottom “Kings County Web Site”.

From this home page you can access the local driving conditions, The Weather Channel’s local weather forecast, the Kings County Extreme Heat Emergency Plan, and other important announcements for our area such as the closure/opening of the Kings River.

  • Foreign Language Materials:
    http://www.kingscountyoem.com/CountyKings/spanish1.htm

Did you know that we have materials in Spanish? You will also find this button to the left on the Navigation bar as well. You may also access materials under the “en Espanol” at the top of the page. Just place your cursor over the button and a drop down box will appear.

So much information at your fingertips and all in one place! As a reminder, you can print out this information from here, or go to www.kingscountyoem.com under “Preparedness Facts” at the top of the page – 2011 Facts of the Week. Once you click on the Fact of the Week by date, there will be a PDF format for you to print out. Remember…knowledge is power!

Do your part for safety awareness by passing this information along to anyone you can think of who would benefit.

Have a great week, and remember…… Be Responsible - Be Ready - Be Prepared!
