How to Stay Safe this Holiday Season

Did you notice that Christmas advertising came even earlier this year? Two weeks before Halloween I noticed all the lay-a-way for Christmas ads. Whatever happened to enjoying each holiday as it comes? Sometimes with all the holiday rush, we tend to overlook the usual safety tips and suggestions as useless information…which is exactly what the "holiday bandits" want you to think. Don't be caught unprepared! Here are a few suggestions to adhere to this and future holiday seasons not only for your safety, but for smart shopping.

Money

Cash:

Only carry a small amount of cash with you; that way if you are robbed, at least you won't lose everything you earned. You'll also be less of a target if you don't have a thick wallet sticking out of your pant pocket, or purse.

ATM Machines:

  • During the holiday shopping season, ATM machines get extra use, so make sure you are diligent when using them.
  • Only use an ATM in a well lit area where other people are present.
  • Cover your pin number and take your cash as soon as it comes out.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and don't let anyone stand too close to you.
  • Don't engage in conversation; stay focused!

Retail Shopping

  Purse:
  • As with any other time of year, it is important to keep your purse closed (zipped or snapped) at all times. ( I know, I know, when you are trying to get out of the way for the next person in line you want to hurry and move on and you tell yourself that you'll zip that purse up when you get in the car).

  • Hold your purse tightly against your body and walk with confidence.

While Shopping:

  • Do not shop until you drop. The more tired you are, the less alert you will be.

  • Do not wait until the store closes to leave; there will be a greater chance of being robbed or mugged if less people are around.

  • If you must shop for a lot of items all at once go with someone who can help you carry your bags, or take advantage of the rental carts so you may take your packages to your car all at once.

  • If you are concerned about your safety, do not hesitate to ask a security guard to escort you to your car. After all, that's what they are there for - your security.

Parking:

  • Parking lots will be crowded but do your best to park as close to the store entrance as possible. If you are unable to do so, try to park in a well lit area.

  • Avoid parking next to larger vehicles, and keep your car away from anything where a criminal can hide like a dumpster or bush.

  • If you are going to shop at a different location once you have made a purchase, make sure you keep your gifts out of sight. Take a blanket if your car does not provide a privacy panel in the trunk.

  • Try to get all of your shopping at one location done at once. Do not place gifts in your car and then go back into the store to buy more presents. Criminals are experts at people watching, so they'll be watching to see who has put a new unattended purchase in their car and seize the opportunity to steal it.

At Home

  Gifts:
  • Although it looks picturesque to have your presents wrapped decoratively through the window, it is best to keep gifts away from plain sight. Close your curtains and shut the blinds if you cannot avoid placing your gifts by the window.

  • After you open your presents it is best to break down all boxes - especially if it is obvious an expensive item was inside such as a flat screen TV. Keep trash in your garage until collection day; that way thieves won't be able to determine what you received for the holidays

Internet:

  • Internet scams increase during the holiday season so you'll need to be more diligent.

  • Scams artists are clever at creating fraudulent shopping web sites, so be sure to verity that the site is legitimate before entering your credit card information online.

  • Read reviews written by former customers. Look for old reviews as well as recent ones.

  • Use popular sellers like Amazon.com, Buy.com, Walmart.com, Bestbuy.com and Borders.com.

  • Always check your credit card statements to ensure only purchases you have made are listed. If you spot any unauthorized charges contact your credit card company immediately.

The holiday season is the best time of year for criminals to steal gifts from cars and homes

The winter holiday season is the best time of year for criminals; they have the opportunity to steal gifts from cars, from people as they are leaving the store and even from people's homes.

Instead of being the season of giving, criminals see it as the season for taking. By following the tips above, you'll prevent becoming another statistic of holiday crime and have the opportunity to enjoy the holidays while still staying safe.
